Today our 6th Grade Earth Science students turned the football field into a scale model of the solar system! Using printed photographs of the Sun, Moon, planets, asteroid belt, and even comets, students placed each object at its correct distance to show just how vast — and mostly empty — our solar system really is.

With the Sun on the goal line, here’s how our cosmic walk measured out:

🌑 Mercury → 1.3 yards

🌒 Venus → 2.4 yards

🌍 Earth → 3.3 yards (Moon only 0.3 inches away!)

🔴 Mars → 5.1 yards

☄️ Asteroid Belt → 8.3 yards

🌟 Jupiter → 17.3 yards

💍 Saturn → 31.9 yards

❄️ Uranus → 64 yards

🌀 Neptune → 100 yards (far goal line!)

🪐 Pluto → 131.7 yards (over 30 yards past the field!)

Students noticed how tightly packed the rocky planets are near the Sun and how spread out the gas giants are across the outer solar system. They also saw the huge “empty” gaps in space, helping them understand why astronomers measure distance in Astronomical Units (AU) and why space travel is so challenging.

The biggest takeaway? Earth is just a tiny blue marble in a giant, mostly empty cosmic neighborhood. 🌌

Hands-on, minds-on learning at its best — our Falcons are now officially Space Scale Experts!

Our 6th graders stepped into the shoes of reporters today as they analyzed old family photographs from Mr. Rosengren’s collection—everything from professional portraits to casual family snapshots. These photographs are primary sources—real evidence from the actual time of an event—and they gave students a chance to practice critical thinking while connecting with history in a personal way.

Using the Six Reporter’s Questions, students examined each photo carefully:
🔹 WHO? Who are the main people in the photograph? Who might have taken it?
🔹 WHAT? What is happening in the photo? What event or moment is being captured?
🔹 WHEN? When did this event happen? Can we guess the date or time period?
🔹 WHERE? Where was the photo taken? What clues help us identify the location?
🔹 WHY? Why was this photograph taken? What story does it tell?
🔹 HOW? How was the photo taken? What kind of camera or technology might have been used?

By answering these questions, students discovered that even a simple family photograph can unlock stories about people, places, and events. More importantly, they learned that every photograph—like every artifact from the past—has a voice that helps us understand history better.

So proud of their curiosity, sharp thinking, and thoughtful discussions today!

Today some of our 6th graders stepped back in time to explore actual newspapers from the 1860s and 1870s—and then compared them with how we get our news today through the online West Central Tribune.

Students discovered big differences in layout, language, and speed of delivery—but also noticed the important similarities that connect the past to today: both types of newspapers keep communities informed, share local and world events, and give people a voice.

As you can see in the photos, our Venn diagrams helped us organize what’s the same and what’s different. A powerful reminder that while the way we get news has changed dramatically, the purpose—staying connected and informed—remains the same.
